Drop-In DIY: Make A Pair of Earrings

This is a relatively quick project. As you’ll see, in less than ten minutes, you can make a pair of earrings! And, the skills you learn in this video are also the same steps you will take to make any kind of charm for bracelets or pendants for necklaces.

Let’s get started!

Supplies:

Bead Board

Round Nose Pliers

Chain Nose Pliers

Wire Cutters

Stones (in this example, fluorite and smoky quartz)

2 ~ 2inch Sterling Silver Head Pins

6 ~ 4mm Sterling Silver Daisy Spacer Beads

2 ~ 3mm Sterling Silver Round Beads

2 Sterling Silver Lever-Back Earring Components

**Note: you don’t have to use sterling silver. If you have stainless steel, alloy, copper, etc., it will work just as well.

  1. Start by putting one of the daisy spacers on your head pin.

  2. Add smoky quartz bead.

  3. Add another of the daisy spacers.

  4. Add fluorite bead.

  5. Add another daisy spacers

  6. Finish off by adding the 3mm round bead.

You’ll notice on your needle nose pliers that they taper from the base to the tip. The width of the pliers’ tip will determine the width of the loop you are going to create. So, if you make your loop closer to the end, it will be smaller, and closer to the base, it will be wider. The only time you’ll want to use the widest part of the pliers is if you plan to make a necklace pendant, and you’ll want a chain to fit through the loop in your charm.

For this project, you’ll want a smaller loop, so grasp the head pin close to the round spacer bead with the tip of your pliers. Next, bend your wrist back towards you, making a bend in the wire.

To create the hook: if you are using a soft metal like sterling silver, with your finger, you can bend the wire across the top of the pliers away from you and downward. If using a harder metal, use your chain nose pliers to bend the wire.

To close the hook into a loop: with your chain nose pliers, grasp the wire and bend it around the neck of the hook, going towards you, then going around two or three times, until the neck is covered. If there is a “tail” left, using your wire cutters, carefully cut the tail as close to the neck as possible without cutting through the neck. If there is a small barb left, tamp it down with either your needle nose or chain nose pliers.

Attaching the earring hardware: the loop at the bottom of the earring acts like a jump ring. Open it with your chain nose pliers, attach the charm you just made, and then close.

Well Done!

You have just made a pair of earrings!
